But too much of the debate is still around financial valuation, as opposed to the underlying intrinsic value of the best of Silicon Valley’s new companies. My own theory is that we are in the middle of a dramatic and broad technological and economic shift in which software companies are poised to take over large swathes of the economy.
More and more major businesses and industries are being run on software and delivered as online services—from movies to agriculture to national defense. Many of the winners are Silicon Valley-style entrepreneurial technology companies that are invading and overturning established industry structures. Over the next 10 years, I expect many more industries to be disrupted by software, with new world-beating Silicon Valley companies doing the disruption in more cases than not.

“I have a phrase I use a lot, which is my favorite Star Wars phrase, my favorite Yoda quote “Do, or do not. There is no try”. And when I think about entrepreneurs and I think about the experience I’ve had as an entrepreneur, as an angel investor and as a venture investor, the notion of trying is not really a core part of what the great entrepreneurs have done.The great entrepreneurs make a decision as to whether they’re going to do something or not. And then go after with a full force of everything they have. And so this sort of notion of “I’m going to try to” really almost out of the gate undermines your ability to go do. And so one of the things that I’ve tried to do is eliminate the word try from the vocabulary. Everybody got that, I got a couple of titters, come on wake-up! If you think about what you’re most proud of, and when I think about what I’m most proud of in terms of what I’ve accomplished, much of it isn’t the outcome. But it was the effort that led to the outcome, whether the outcome was successful of or not successful. And in the cases where I didn’t feel like I gave it my all, it’s actually kind of disappointed with how I engaged with something. But in the cases where I felt like I gave it my all, I really felt like, I would sort of reflect back on it and feel really proud of what the outcome is, whatever it was.”
